Skimmer, overflow or infinity: choosing your pool

The difference goes beyond appearance. Pool type affects circulation, edge construction and plant requirements.

Reading time · 2–3 minutes

Skimmer: a straightforward layout

Surface water enters skimmers in the pool wall, passes through filtration and returns through inlets. The usual water level sits below the coping, although special high-level skimmers also exist. This is a practical choice when a straightforward layout and manageable construction matter.

Overflow: water at the edge

Water flows into an overflow channel and then a balance tank. The design must allow for channels, the tank, level control and cleaning access. A consistent overflow line depends on accurate geometry. Comparing only concrete and mosaic prices misses these additional technical requirements.

Infinity: an architectural overflow edge

An infinity edge makes water appear to continue beyond one or more sides. The effect depends on the terrain, edge height, viewing position and background. Water collection, the balance tank and drainage belong in the structural design. The visual effect does not replace engineering the overflow detail.

Compare like for like

Compare the same dimensions, depth, finish and equipment. Then consider overflow complexity, servicing access and ongoing care. The best type fits your site, your habits and your maintenance budget.
